San José lies in the Central Valley. The National Theatre, museums and Mercado Central introduce history and contemporary life. The centre is busy.
After a long-haul flight, I plan time to settle in here. Your tour can begin the next morning. For cultural interests, I reserve a full city day.
Culture and market
I choose one main museum and add a market visit with a simple lunch. Around the National Theatre, architecture and public spaces belong in the walk. A local guide explains historical connections beyond façade photographs.
Before a long transfer, I leave your evening quiet.
Hotel and arrival
I compare a city hotel for restaurants and museums with a brief airport stay. The international airport lies outside the centre. I establish transfers and departure time accordingly.
For city days, I usually plan without a rental car. Collection can happen before onward travel. During vehicle stops, luggage stays out of sight.
Food and onward travel
I suggest gallo pinto for breakfast and casado for a simple lunch. A relaxed table gets time. I add a Central Valley coffee finca according to your later route.
After a planned Monteverde coffee tour, another museum day brings different impressions. For La Fortuna or the coast, I reserve a separate transfer block.
