What makes this place distinctive

Red erosion formations spread through Cuzco; in Los Hoyos, they appear grey. Both landscapes belong to the Tatacoa. A guided walk explains their differences.

Choosing the right experiences

Despite its desert name, the Tatacoa is described as tropical dry forest. You can walk through the landscape in the morning or late afternoon. I leave a longer break in the middle of the day.

Getting around and local experiences

I choose accommodation for early and late outings. I arrange transport between Cuzco and Los Hoyos separately.

Suggested itinerary

  1. You explore Cuzco’s red formations near the end of the day.

  2. You visit Los Hoyos early. Midday heat leaves time to rest.

  3. I add stargazing under clear skies. Before onward travel, I reserve time for Neiva.

Good to know

Clear night skies remain uncertain, even across several nights. I confirm drinking water, sun protection and return transport before you leave. The landscape offers a reason to visit alongside astronomy.
