How long to stay?
3–4 nights suggested for planning
Your Caribbean stay
City walls and historic façades surround Cartagena’s streets in the Caribbean warmth. Cartagena de Indias is Bolívar’s capital, with modern districts, restaurants and fortified areas. I can plan a cultural stay, time together or an island excursion.
I ask whether you want historic streets, an urban beach or several quiet coastal days. Each calls for a different hotel setting. I compare the surroundings against the days and evenings you want.
Walking through the old town
I begin old-town walks early, leaving time for squares, façades and the city walls. Architecture and everyday street life share the same routes. Pauses let you see more than the next named building.
I leave midday for shaded lunch or a hotel break before a later walk. For history, I choose a guide who explains colonial rule and daily life. The buildings then sit within the stories of people who lived here.

The port and its fortifications
Cartagena’s UNESCO-listed port, fortifications and monuments reflect Caribbean maritime trade and its protection. Defences built from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries used the bay’s entrances. They protected a wider harbour area.
Churches and public buildings concentrated in the historic centre. San Diego was associated with merchants and crafts. Enslaved people and artisans lived in Getsemaní, contributing to the port economy.
Getsemaní’s streets and residents
Street art, colourful buildings and cultural venues draw visitors to Getsemaní. Afro-Colombian history and the residential neighbourhood remain part of the visit. A local guide can introduce perspectives beyond the familiar photo stops.
I give Getsemaní its own walk and time for a meal. I choose a route with room for residents’ entrances and daily movement. For overnight stays, I compare the hotel street and evening noise.
Castillo de San Felipe
Castillo de San Felipe adds another historical visit. I give it a separate morning from a long old-town tour. I consider heat, steps, access and the time you want there.
The afternoon can remain free for lunch, photography, crafts or a hotel rest. I only add another substantial tour if you want it.
Historic districts and modern hotels
Bocagrande, El Laguito and Castillogrande have larger hotels and urban beaches. Historic districts put old-town streets close to your accommodation. I compare properties within the setting you want.
I ask about historic atmosphere, larger hotel facilities and quiet coast or island time. For several beach days, I can add a separate coastal stage. I compare rooms, location and journeys against the whole stay.
Choosing a boat excursion
Offshore islands and archipelagos can add a sea excursion to your city stay. I compare time ashore, group size, boat type and services. More stops can mean less time at the place you want to enjoy.
I confirm boarding, return, meals, extra charges and arrangements for changing weather. I ask early about young children and sensitivity to sea conditions. I retain another day or a land option for the excursion.
A four-day route
- Day 1 — Arrival. I arrange your transfer and leave time to check in and rest. A short late-afternoon walk can introduce the surroundings. Dinner remains open around your arrival.
- Day 2 — The historic city. I arrange a morning guide in the old town. After lunch and a break, you can explore independently. I can also book an evening restaurant if you want.
- Day 3 — Getsemaní or the fortress. You can explore Getsemaní with a guide or on your own. For architecture and fortifications, I can give the day to Castillo de San Felipe.
- Day 4 — Islands or city time. I can arrange the boat excursion or leave more time on land. On departure day, I prioritise your airport transfer and place the boat trip elsewhere.
With more days, I can include both Getsemaní and the fortress. Free afternoons can remain between the guided visits.
Planning around tropical heat
I place longer outdoor walks around shade and midday breaks. Water, a sun hat and light clothing help with the heat. I choose a hotel location that lets you return for an afternoon rest.
Questions about Cartagena
Does Cartagena give me a quiet beach holiday?
City visits, urban beaches and island stays offer different days. I arrange the route and accommodation around the Caribbean setting you want.
How long should I stay?
I plan three to four nights for the old town, Getsemaní and an outing. Several beach days need additional nights.
My 14-day example includes six nights for the city, coast and rest.
What works alongside Cartagena?
Medellín or the Coffee Region adds different landscapes and activities. I plan Santa Marta as a separate stage with travel time and a buffer.
