How long to stay?
2–3 nights suggested for planning
Between coast and mountains
Santa Marta’s promenade runs beside the Caribbean, with the Sierra Nevada nearby. Founded as a Spanish city on 29 July 1525, it is Magdalena’s capital. Port trade and repeated attacks form part of its history.
I divide your time between the city, coast and mountains according to your interests. Historic streets, a beach hotel and a mountain lodge need different transfers. I choose the accommodation after deciding which days belong in each setting.
History and different voices
The cathedral and colonial buildings introduce Santa Marta’s history. The gold museum explores Tairona culture; Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino introduces independence history. Simón Bolívar died there on 17 December 1830.
I can arrange a short guide-led walk connecting historic buildings with the city today. A museum can follow, or the remaining hours can stay free. I separate longer visits from the hottest hours and include Indigenous perspectives alongside colonial history.

Time beside the bay
The Bastidas promenade gives a waterfront view beyond the historic streets. I can leave late afternoon for a walk and early dinner. You can spend that time in the city without another booked tour.
A room beside the city bay gives you an urban coastal stay. For quieter beach days, I plan a separate coastal stage. I ask about the atmosphere, city visits and beach time you want.
The Sierra Nevada’s communities
Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo communities are among the peoples connected with the Sierra Nevada. The mountains have cultural meaning alongside their landscapes. I arrange cultural encounters through invitations and local partners.
I explain what an encounter involves, including access and photography guidance. I leave time to listen rather than adding a brief community stop. Longer treks and remote mountain stays receive their own stage, preparation and local arrangements.
A separate Tayrona stage
Tayrona has different entrances, habitats and visitor areas. I choose the access and route around your accommodation and dates. A park visit has its own place in the itinerary.
I ask whether you want a walk, a particular bay or an overnight nature stay. Then I compare a day trip with accommodation closer to the chosen entrance. I describe the route, return and any overnight before booking.
Hotels and daily journeys
A city hotel can serve cultural visits; several beach days may need another location. After a long nature outing, I arrange the return and confirm dinner options. Those details matter alongside the room and setting.
I confirm whether the property lies in Santa Marta, along the coast or near nature. I compare dining, shopping, noise, walking distances and excursion pickups. Your chosen visits determine how many longer journeys the stay needs.
A three-day city stage
- Day 1 — Arrival. I arrange your hotel transfer and leave time to settle in. Later, you can walk along the promenade. The evening stays free; a mountain journey has its own stage.
- Day 2 — History and daily life. I arrange a morning walk with a local guide. A museum can follow your interests, with lunch and a break afterwards. Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino can add another historical focus, or the afternoon remains open.
- Day 3 — Coast or Tayrona. You can begin a separately arranged Tayrona stage or remain on the coast. I confirm park entrance, route and return. On departure day, I prioritise the airport journey over a long nature outing.
This outline covers the city stage. Beach stays, mountains and multi-day walks can add time to the wider journey.
Preparing for your next stage
I keep coastal visits shorter, with shade and breaks. Water and clothes for the heat help during the day. I adapt the packing list if you continue into higher ground or forest.
For longer nature trips, I confirm which bags travel with you and where others stay. A large suitcase may need secure storage before the onward route. I arrange luggage and transport together.
Questions about Santa Marta
Can Santa Marta and Tayrona be part of one trip?
Yes, I give the city and park their own stages and transfers. Each has time for its visits and return arrangements.
How much time should I give the city?
I suggest two to three nights for an introduction. Beach stays, mountains and multi-day hikes add further nights.
Can I change hotel and be in Cartagena?
Cartagena needs a separate travel stage. I allow the journey and a buffer, leaving other appointments away from the transfer day.
