Tayrona National Park

Where the rainforest reaches the Caribbean

How long to stay?
2–3 nights suggested for planning

Forest and Caribbean coast

Coastal forest borders Tayrona’s beaches, mangroves and marine habitats. The park lies within the traditional territory of Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo peoples. Its protected habitats and cultural meaning shape the visit.

I ask whether you want a long walk, shorter nature visit or approved swimming. Each needs its own route and timetable. I describe the day around your group and the rest of your journey.

Entrance and return route

Zaino, Calabazo, Palangana and Bahía Concha are entrances or visitor areas within Tayrona. Arrecifes–Cabo San Juan is one of the park’s described visitor routes. I choose access around your accommodation, fitness and the coastal time you want.

For a longer walk, I give the route the day. I explain distance, endpoint and whether the return uses the same path or other transport. The entrance name is one part of the plan.

Planning around rest periods

The “Respira Tayrona” programme provides recurring rest periods for regeneration and cultural processes. I confirm which areas and routes apply to your dates. I retain another day or a different nature visit within the journey.

I confirm entry arrangements before booking and use current information for the visit. An older traveller’s account can describe a different situation. I explain how a change to access would affect your route.

The whole walking day

Heat, humidity, ground conditions, walking time and breaks influence the effort of a coastal hike. I include both transfers when planning the day. Distance is one part of that calculation.

I choose a route with time and energy left for the return. For children or limited mobility, I research the paths, steps and access before booking. I describe the approach alongside the beach you hope to reach.

Beaches and park habitats

Park signs and local instructions identify where swimming is permitted. I choose beach time around the rules for that area and the conditions. I include authorised paths and access in the route.

I explain taking waste out, avoiding feeding and giving wildlife space before your visit. Local guidance introduces the forest and coast while protecting their habitats and practices.

Staying overnight

Sleeping inside the park, near an entrance or farther away creates different transfer plans. I confirm the accommodation’s location and facilities. An overnight can allow a quieter start the next morning.

I explain sleeping arrangements, bathrooms, meals, bags, electricity and physical access. Hammocks, tents and hotel rooms offer different facilities. I include the next morning and exit route before the onward journey.

A two-day route

  1. Day 1 — Your park route. I arrange early breakfast, transport to the chosen entrance and entry formalities. Your walk allows time for forest, coast, explanations and lunch. I then arrange the booked overnight or a return to your starting point.
  2. Day 2 — The return. After an overnight, I leave a quiet breakfast before the agreed exit route. From outside accommodation, a second visit can follow another route. I keep the afternoon for the return before longer onward travel.

I prepare the sequence around your dates. Your quote names the entrance, guide, transport, route and accommodation once their arrangements are established.

The details I arrange

I list pickup, entrance, return, walking distance and services in the proposal. I confirm overnight details, required visitor services and date-specific entry charges. Park information also includes mandatory accident insurance for visitors.

Medical advice can help determine which route and equipment fit your needs. I use those requirements to plan access, breaks and your onward connection.

Questions about Tayrona

Is one day enough?
I choose the duration around your hotel, route and return. A longer walk may need an overnight.

Can I swim at every beach?
No, I plan swimming around permissions and conditions for the chosen bay. The instructions on site determine what you can do that day.

What happens if the park closes?
I move the park day when the route allows, or arrange another nature experience. I explain the alternative and its access before you choose.

Good to know

Rest periods and temporary restrictions can close routes or sectors. Earlier reopening announcements do not confirm access for later dates. A calm-looking sea does not establish safe swimming conditions.
